Instrumentation

The Gonstead System of Chiropractic was developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead in Mt. Horeb Wisconsin over a period of several decades. Dr. Gonstead was first a mechanical engineer who would later graduate from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA in 1923. He was an American of Norwegian decent who began applying engineering principles and the scientific method to develop the most accurate, thorough and effective chiropractic technique in the world. The system is both a specific analysis and adjusting system that consistently produces patient results when many other methods have failed.
Dr. Gonstead practiced up until his death in 1978 at the age of eighty. He founded the largest chiropractic clinic in the world, seeing the most patients, complete with an airstrip to care for patients nationally and internationally. He became one of the most influential figures in chiropractic history. The Gonstead Clinic is located in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, which grew into a major training center for his method.
His approach emphasized very precise spinal analysis, often using tools like:
-
Full spine x-rays
-
Instrumentation
-
Static and motion palpation
-
Detailed biomechanical evaluation of the pelvis and spine
The idea behind the Gonstead system is to locate a very specific spinal segment that is malfunctioning and correct it with a highly targeted adjustment, rather than more generalized spinal manipulation.
